Landscapes Inspired by Old Masters

Laurie Barnes, Elizabeth B. McGraw Senior Curator of Chinese Art, illustrates how Wu Hong (1615-1680) and Zhou Kai (1779-1837) used works by past Chinese masters as catalysts for their personal creativity by presenting images of and ideas about landscapes created as early as the 900s inspired these two artists.

Ellen Graham: Unscripted

Join Lauren Richman, Ph.D., William and Sarah Ross Soter Curator of Photography, for a presentation of the exhibition Ellen Graham: Unscripted. Learn more about this remarkable photographer who for more than six decades wielded her camera to summon the essence of a person on light-sensitive paper. Best known for her portraits of actors, musicians, performers, and athletes, this exhibition highlights several of Graham’s gifts to the Norton along with a generous array of special loans — both photographs and photographic ephemera — from the Ellen Graham Archive.

Friday, August 23 / 6 - 7 PM

Dragons, Commanders of Rain

Laurie Barnes, Elizabeth B. McGraw Senior Curator of Chinese Art, invites you to join her to discover why Chinese court robes and a Japanese print depict dragons,
the heavenly sovereigns petitioned to bring rain in ritual ceremonies. She will discuss the three works on view in the exhibition “Dragons, Commanders of Rain” while making connections to used by Chinese rulers who engaged in divinations asking for life-giving rain over 3000 years, and rain-making dragons illustrated in the
Classic of Mountains and Seas, written in the 4th - 1st century BCE.
