ancient Zhou dynasty (c. 1045-771 BCE) to the end of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). This talk will explore how images of the horse evolved in Chinese art history to form an engaging symbolic language conveying the political and social messages of their time.

Dazzling East and West: Japanese Acrobats and the Making of a Transnational Japanese Spectacle
Rhiannon Paget, Curator of Asian Art at the John & Mabel Ringling Museum of Art, explores Hayatake Torakichi’s influential career. Woodblock prints by artists like Utagawa Yoshitora and Utagawa Kunisada II show how the Hayatake troupe blended theatrical tradition, folklore, and spectacle into dynamic performances.
