ArtSpeaks | La Florida: Flowers in Chinese Paintings

Friday October 10, 6 – 7 pm

La Florida: Flowers in Chinese Painting Join Willow Hai — Independent Curator and Writer, and former Senior Vice President, Director, and Chief Curator of the China Institute Gallery in New York — for a conversation with Shawn Yuan, Elizabeth B. McGraw Senior Curator of Asian Art. They will discuss Willow’s distinguished career, curatorial experience, and contributions to the field of Chinese art. During her tenure at China Institute, Willow organized more than 70 acclaimed exhibitions, including her most recent, Flowers on a River: The Art of Chinese Flower and Bird Painting. In this program, she will share her deep knowledge of China’s artistic traditions, focusing on the enduring legacy of flower painting and highlighting select works currently on view in the Niblack Gallery at the Norton.

ArtSpeaks | The Leiden Collection

Friday, October 24, 6 – 7 pm

Join us for a public conversation between Thomas Kaplan, founder of The Leiden Collection, the finest collection of Dutch Old Master paintings in private hands, and the Collection's Senior Advisor, Arthur K. Wheelock Jr, who served for many years as curator of Northern Baroque painting at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Their free-flowing discussion will cover a range of topics, including the character of The Leiden Collection, the distinctive qualities of Dutch art, particularly works by Rembrandt, and some of the highlights in the special exhibition Art and Life in Rembrandt's Time: Masterpieces from The Leiden Collection.

Join Elizabeth Nogrady, Curator of The Leiden Collection, to explore daily life in 17th-century Holland and its depiction in art. Paintings by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Johannes Vermeer, and their peers appealed to a public eager to acquire art, a widespread phenomenon in the newly independent Dutch Republic.

Artist Talk | Atlantic Coast: A Conversation with Anastasia Samoylova

Join artist Anastasia Samoylova and Lauren Richman, Ph.D., William and Sarah Ross Soter Senior Curator of Photography, for a conversation about the special exhibition Anastasia Samoylova: Atlantic Coast, featuring recent work that explores the tension between myth and reality in the American landscape, as seen along the historic U.S. Route 1 from Key West, Florida, to Fort Kent, Maine.

Artist Talk | Shara Hughes: Inside Outside

Saturday, November 22, 2 – 3 pm

Join artist Shara Hughes and Arden Sherman, Glenn W. and Cornelia T. Bailey Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, to discuss Hughes’ special exhibition, Shara Hughes: Inside Outside. In her paintings, Hughes invites viewers to enter the psychological complexity of her inner world, crafting kaleidoscopic visions of a constantly evolving environment. The exhibition features a selection of her earlier works spanning the past two decades, recent paintings, and new ceramic works created during her residency at the Norton.
